Location
Our location at Flying Cloud Municipal Airport (FCM), just minutes from downtown Minneapolis, is ideal for both new and experienced pilots for several reasons. First, FCM is a Class D towered airport located within the lateral boundaries of Minneapolis International's Class B airspace. This enables students to immediately become comfortable with the communication and procedures necessary to operate in a controlled environment. This type of learning and understanding from day one will make you a more professional and competent pilot who is able to navigate to and from a variety of airports with confidence. Second, FCM airport has three separate hard surfaced runways. This means less chance of having to postpone scheduled flights because of unfavorable crosswinds. Finally, there are many other airports (both controlled and uncontrolled) nearby which provide an excellent opportunity to practice and train in a variety of airport environments, adding to your aviator proficiency.

Ground School
Hummingbird Aviation offers ground schools for both airplanes and helicopters. Each ground school class is 48-hours of quality ground instruction. Class meets Monday and Wednesday nights for helicopters and Tuesday and Thursday nights for airplanes from 7 to 10 pm at Hummingbird Aviation facilities at the Flying Cloud Airport. Ground school concludes with an endorsement to take your Private Pilot FAA Knowledge Test. The Knowledge Test completion certificate is valid for 24 months and is a prerequisite for your private pilot flight test with an FAA designated pilot examiner. You can take the FAA knowledge test right at the Hummingbird Aviation facility. We have three testing rooms with new computers for your convenience.
